WALKING IN THE PELION Mark Taplin £350 25 June - 2 July |
|
This will be a week focussed around a flexible and varied programme of walks — from a couple of hours to half and full day outings — through apple orchards and olive groves, deep into the woods, up the mountain, along the wilder stretches of coast line, down to the beaches of the Aegean. There will be ample opportunity to swim, relax and visit places of interest.
The itinerary will be tailored to the requests and abilities of the group. It is not intended necessarily for dedicated and hardened hikers, although there are some challenging routes on offer; and therefore a good level of fitness and agility is advisable. For some of the more adventurous walks we can be delivered or collected part way by vehicle. Sections of traditional cobbled paths (kalderime) are still there to be found — stone arched bridges — magnificent forests of chestnut and beech — small country churches — stunning views — isolated beaches — shady village plateias. There are famed attractions that we will include, but also forgotten gems that we will seek out. We will meet and speak with local Greeks, and perhaps even learn a little of their language. We will talk about the history and myths and drink in the atmosphere and landscape of this unique and magical place that is Pelion. The only requirements are a love of walking, an appetite to experience something a little different to the traditional Greek beach and taverna holiday and a willingness to participate in the daily rhythms of the Kalikalos summer community (see web pages for details). Sensible footwear is essential, of course — a day-pack and water bottle would be useful. Wet weather gear should not be necessary at this time of year, but you cannot be certain.
To get an idea of the terrain, try looking at the map by Anavasi, sheet 6.21 Mt Pelion (www.mountains.gr).
