Once you have arrived in Greece, the second stage of the journey is to make your way to the city of Volos. For more specifics, check out these detailed travel tips compiled by Kalikalos visitors over the years.
Thessaloniki to Volos
- First travel from the airport to the main KTEL intercity bus terminal by local bus X1 or N1 (nighttime). It’s the last stop. You buy a ticket at a little kiosk which is directly in front of the airport, next to the bus stop. The buses are fairly regular, and you stamp your ticket in the ticket slot on the bus. The bus takes around one hour. As of April 2025, in most of Thessaliniki buses you can directly use your credit/debit card at the validation machine inside the buses. They have instructions in English and other languages.
- Take the KTEL regional bus from Thessaloniki to Volos. We recommend that you book your ticket by phone (+30 24210 33254 or +30 24210 25527) or online before you travel. TheKTEL bus company will hold your reservation up to 30 min before the bus departs. At that time if you have not got a ticket some may become available. The early morning 6am flights from the UK should allow you to get the 1.30pm bus. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to get to Volos.
- In case you got an online ticket to Volos, there is a chance that the KTEL bus driver will require you to get a printed one too. It’s a simple and rather straight forward process. You can print it at the ticket booth in the KTEL terminal (it’s directly next to the station’s coffee shop/restaurant).

- You could also take the train from Thessaloniki to Volos, with a change at Larissa station (train from Thessaloniki to Larisa, bus – departing just outside the train station – from Larisa to Volos). Visit the OSE website for more details and ticketing.
- A bus ticket from Thessaloniki to Volos typicaly costs ~20 euros (updated on January 2025).
- You can book a return ticket for ~36 euros even if you don’t know the exact return date – you can just put a dummy date. Afterwards, you can convert the return ticket to an open one – you can call or email them – and book your seat when you’re certain about your return date (updated on January 2025).

Athens to Volos
- Travel from the airport to Athens city centre by metro or bus. If you plan to go directly from the airport to the KTEL bus to Volos, you can ride directly on bus X93 . Otherwise, we suggest taking the metro (blue line). The bus from Athens Airport (ATH) to Liosion Bus Station, takes about 1 hour and 26 minutes and costs €6. There’s a direct bus departing from the airport and arriving at Liosion Bus Station every 20 minutes, operating daily.
- From Athens city center, take a local bus to KTEL Liosion Terminal B on Gousiou, get off at a side street at 260 Liosion street.
- We recommend that you book your ticket by phone (+30 24210 33254 or +30 24210 25527) or online beforehand. The KTEL bus company will hold your reservation up to 30 min before the bus departs. At that time if you have not got a ticket some may become available.
- It takes about 4 hours to get to Volos from Athens Bus Station.

- You could also take the train from Athens to Volos, with a change at Larissa station to take a bus. Visit the OSE website for more details and ticketing. You can find an example of the train schedule below. Note that the train from Athens to Larissa departs from the main railway station, co-located with the Larissa Metro Station.
- A train/bus ticket from Athens to Volos typicaly costs ~ 36 euros.
Other Options
- You can rent a car when you arrive in Thessaloniki or Athens and then drive to Spiti ton Kentavron, Anilio. There is a GPS point marking the roadside where you need to find a park and then you walk down a donkey path to the centre. Taking a left at the fork. Do call us to meet you for help.
- There is always the possibility of ride-sharing with other Kalikalos guests arriving in Thessaloniki or Athens at about the same time. Please contact us if you would like our support in helping you coordinate your travel with others.
- If you arrive by ferry to Igoumanitsa Port in western Greece, take the KTEL regional bus to Ioannina. From there, you need to change busses for Volos. Visit the KTEL Ioannina website for information and ticketing.
- If you arrive by airplane to Skiathos Island Airport, take the ferry to Volos. There are several ferries a day, typically taking ~2+hours to arrive and cost 35-41 euros. If you plan to come by a local bus from Volos do aim to arrive in time to catch the last bus around 1.30pm.
- Have in mind that there aren’t any direct flights from Athens to Volos.
