Become a Kalikalos International Rep

A Call for Kalikalos Resource People!

handout brochuresIn order to promote the Kalikalos Centres we are continuing to recruit a network of Worldwide Reps. We want people to know that we are planting a few seeds of Findhorn in the Mediterranean sun! So, if you have visited our Centres in Pelion, enjoyed your time and had a fulfilling experience, please consider becoming one of our reps to tell others about us. As a rep you distribute Kalikalos brochures in your area and field enquiries from interested local people. We especially like to get our brochures in health food shops, community centres, alternative bookshops, libraries, housing coops, universities, colleges and complementary medicine centres.

notice board

Pin our brochure on your local notice boards!

To entice you to consider joining our network of Kalikalos reps, we are offering you 33% off the usual community guest rate (currently worth €100 a week). In addition, we offer a 15- 25% discount on selected workshops at the three centres.

We very much hope this initiative will appeal to you and that you might feel drawn to contribute whatever energy you would enjoy to give to the project’s sustainability. The amount of work involved is not onerous: we send you 20-25 brochures to distribute in your area, and we include your name and contact details on our spam-proof CONTACT US page on our web site so that local people can contact you for more information about Kalikalos and its two campuses.

We would love to fill the vacant rep positions in the following countries: Israel, Portugal and Poland.

Donate to Kalikalos

Out of its small beginnings as a single Findhorn Foundation inspired holistic centre at Anilio, Pelion in 2001 founded by three Findhorn open community members, Kalikalos has grown over the past 15 years to a network of three autonomous campuses sharing resources and a common vision, each with its own distinctive environment and energy.  Run by a partnership of three non-profit educational organisations, Kalikalos Holistic Centres are dependent on and indebted to the energy given by our dedicated volunteers, and to the donations of supporters like you!

Ascelpius serpent staff

The demigod of Medicine, Asclepius & his serpent staff

Unbeknown to its founders when they began at the beginning of this century, Kalikalos has been guided to incarnate an ancient healing tradition that existed in this region over two millennia ago. Led by Ascelpius, the founder of our western medical tradition who, Greek mythology tells us, was educated by Cheiron Centaur the wounded healer, Pelion became the epicentre of dozens of centres where people came from far and wide to be healed through fasting and dream analysis.

In the spirit of our parent-companies we at the Kalikalos Holistic Network aim to benefit local and global  communities by holding the space for an immersive experience in holistic education at an affordable price. At Kalikalos participants learn and demonstrate a sustainable culture of interdependence. After 15 years of building this network from the ground up, we now are poised for a new level of expansion, a round of development which will only come to fruition through the support of your generous gifts and grants.  At the same time, we operate in a country hamstrung by the austerity measures imposed by the European Central bank which has impacted the infrastructure we depend on (flights to our nearest city of Volos have been sharply cut) and tourism to Greece in general.

If our vision resonates with yours, please consider supporting the Kalikalos Holistic Network as a bronze, silver or gold sustaining supporter with a yearly subscription.

One off donations are also very welcome to our scholarship/bursary fund which allows individuals for whom it would be otherwise impossible due to their financial circumstances  to come to us and benefit from our programs. Donations are also most welcome to support staff stipends for our long term volunteers who return year after year with little or no financial compensation. Currently we are also soliciting donations to allow us to purchase a property in Lanzarote in order to expand our programmes to the winter months.

Please use the non-profit justgive.org button below (or aim your smart phone at the QR code) for either one-off or sustaining contributions.

Lead a Workshop at Kalikalos

Workshop leader leads group

Workshop Leaders

We welcome new workshop leaders who share our holistic perspective and our commitment to peaceful, but radical social change.

Keep in mind that unlike luxury retreat centers, your workshop participants will be contributing to the daily rhythm of life at the Kalikalos Centers. They will be expected to do about 6-7 hr of “karma yoga” during your week. So they will join the evening cooking team one evening in the week, help in the organic gardens or the office a couple of hours in the early evening after beach time, and join the Friday morning 09:30 – 11:30 Centre clean up and restore.

The full authentic community setting is a core of the immersive experience in holistic education that makes Kalikalos unique.

What Are The 4 Areas of Workshops and Retreats Offered Here?

  • Creative arts (painting, drawing, theatre, creative writing … )
  • Healing — Self, Society and Planet
  • The Dance of Intimacy and Harmony Building Communication
  • Self enquiry— Advaita, Vipassana, Sufi, Kabala…

Where Would I Hold My Workshops Sessions and When?

The 7m round reciprocal framed roundhouse at Kissos holds up to 18 people (12 for yoga or dance)

All three campuses have yurts for small groups and 1-1 healing sessions

The 12 x 7.5 m ground floor at the Alexandros Center can accommodate a group of up to 25

The 15 x 10 m longhouse at Anilio is ideal for large dance or yoga groups

Workshop time is from after breakfast till lunchtime (13:30) – about 20 hours per week. Some leaders offer one-on-one sessions after beach time, but please do not plan to offer group sessions in this time as many of your participants will be cooking, gardening or working in the office.

What is the typical daily schedule at Kalikalos?

07:30 Qi Gong, Yoga, Tai Chi (on most weeks)

08:05 Morning sanctuary meditation

08:30 Buffet Breakfast

09:05 Breakfast cleanup

09:30 Staff Attunement / Community meeting on Saturday

09:45 Workshop Session starts

  • 6 evening vegetarian meals (we eat out one night) served at 20:00 (8:30 pm on Fridays)
  • 6 snack lunches ready at 13:30 (packed as picnic box on request)
  • Daily lift (15’) from Kissos and Anilio to the local beaches at Ag Ioannis except on Fridays. Campus Alexandros is in walking distance to Plaka Beach.
  • A team of 5-10 volunteers who coordinate work and model holistic living by example

Can I Bring a Partner or Family members?

Yes! Leaders’ family members pay 1/2 of the normal Community Guest rate and share your room, which is usually Room “H” with a seaview at Kalikalos Kissos and an ensuit twin room with balcony and seaview at Alexandros.

What Financial Plan Does Kalikalos Offer Workshop Leaders?

We split the net income with you 50/50 after deducting our expenses—rent, food, utilities, vehicle insincome sharing graphurance, petrol and maintenance, staff expenses, etc. We estimate these expenses to be about 33% of the published workshop average price, which leaves 67% to be split 50/50 with you, (which works out to 33% of the published price).

Net income is the agreed published price of your week (see graph to right) which combines workshop fee, food, standard accommodation and Centre expenses into one figure, minus discounts, credit card charges and any agreed bursaries. Accommodation supplements may apply at Anilio and Kissos campuses and these are not included in your income calculations.

A deposit of €150—€350 confirms your week. Leader’s deposits are our only income for promotion during the off-season, and these deposits are refunded on arrival, providing that together we recruit at least 4 participants. If for any reason we fail to get a group your deposit still entitles you to a week’s meals and accommodation with us so you can safely book your travel well in advance when air fares are cheapest.

Please click to download a sample leader’s contract.

Who is Responsible for Recruiting Participants?

Leader and Centre agree to independently market. Kalikalos prints color brochures, advertises in magazines in the UK and to a lesser extent in Germany and the USA, and has a dozen or more web agents and promoters. Still, we currently are dependent on you to recruit the bulk of your group.

Become a Facilitator in Residence (FIR) at One of Our Centres

Throughout the season, workshop participants and other community members in the Centres, have access to holistic services offered by our Facilitators-in-Residence (FIRs).

jackie leads Feldenkrais

Over the years our FIRs have offered all types of yoga, massage, art therapy, voice and singing, Feldenkrais method, theater, dance, aromatherapy, creative writing, meditation, astrology, Sociocracy etc.

As our scheduled workshops and retreats typically occupy the mornings from about 9:30 to 1:30, and the afternoons are beach and leisure time, FIRs usually offer their holistic arts in the early evenings from about 6:30 – 7:45 pm, and occasionally after evening dinner cleanup (about 9:30-10:30 pm).

Facilitators-in-Residence offer both group and 1-1 sessions, usually for a modest fee, or a donation. They arrange private sessions via an offers board. Most FIRs charge 15 to 35 euros per private session; some work on a donation or exchange basis.

What is it like to be a Facilitator-in-Residence (FIR) here?

Our Facilitators in Residence (FIR) program welcomes practitioners of any holistic discipline to join as part time staffers for two or more weeks and to offer their services to our guests and other staff on an ad-hoc basis. Virtually any holistic skill or healing art is welcome. For a €135/week reservation fee (minimum two weeks), we offer food and accommodation (shared*) to a limited number of qualified facilitators.  FIR is an inexpensive working holiday. (*Shared accommodation is often in a triple or quad room. A single room can be booked with the usual single supplement of €150/week.)

tai chi at Anilio

Facilitators who are new to us and ecovillage life receive a basic staff orientation during their first week here.

  • adopt a garden bed (1.5 hr divided up as desired)
  • Friday morning cleanup and Centre restore, 9:30 – 11:30 am (2 hr)

  • 1 breakfast layout, 7:30-8:30 am + 9:10 – 9:30 am (cleanup)  (1.5 hr)

Community Living at Kalikalos

livie-in-community2171

Experience community living at Kalikalos without attending a workshop!

Community living Picnic on Plaka beach

Stay with us as a living-in-Community guest and meet new friends sharing your holistic perspective.

Many of our guests choose to come to Kalikalos as Living-in-Community guests without attending a scheduled workshop. Simply being here in the community living environment can be a fulfilling and transformative experience!

Far more than guests, you are community members, joyfully collaborating in the rhythms of daily life and adventuring together though Pilion. You are welcome to attend our morning sharing circles and any of the daily non-workshop activities such as early morning yoga, tai chi or Qi Qong. We will ask you to join the evening cooking team once in the week, do a couple of washing up shifts and to do an occasional bit of gardening. In general you will help with the various tasks that keep our centers functioning.

This amounts to a light and enjoyable 6-7 hours of per week of community service, in the spirit of karma yoga. With the rest of your time, you swim at the beach, hike mountain trails, sit around campfires, enjoy the offerings of our Facilitators-in-Residence and make deep friendships and connections. In a nutshell, this is what community living at Kalikalos is all about.

What Is a Typical Day at Kalikalos Like?

Community living with Taber on Guitar

  • 8:30 Buffet Breakfast
  • 9:05 Breakfast cleanup (everyone helps)

Volunteer at Kalikalos

Each season, people come from all around the world to volunteer at the Kalikalos centers. Volunteers coordinate the rhythms of the center, focalize meals and clean-up, assist with transport to and from the beach, help with gardening, maintenance and shopping, and learn to facilitate group circles. We look especially for individuals with a holistic perspective and ideally some community experience, who enjoy working with groups. Skills in group process, healing, maintenance, vegetarian cookery, gardening, vehicle mechanics, and fluency in Greek language are especially helpful! The opportunities here are somewhat similar to those of WWOOFing, though Kalikalos volunteers do much more than just lending a hand in our organic vegetable garden.

Volunteering gardening

Staff volunteers who stay for some months become the Center’s longer-term faculty, complementing the workshop and retreat leaders by teaching holistic education through role modeling it. So, it’s an opportunity to put your ideals into practice—the best way to learn!

People sometimes ask for a  job description for a volunteer staff position. It is not really possible to provide this because each volunteer must find the area or areas where they see that they can optimally bring their gifts, experience and enthusiasm.

Staff Volunteers Saturday cleanup

The areas of work are the vegetarian kitchen, the organic gardens. homecare, building and maintenance, and office, plus I.T. support (website, social media, blogging and marketing). You will get the opportunity to sample all of these areas during your orientation weeks here, and in time may gravitate to one or two of them. Eventually, if you stay long enough you might find yourself coordinating (focalising) one area which carries more responsibility. Or, perhaps you will prefer to be a gadfly or a “floater” who offers support everywhere.

Staffers begin their time with us with a staff orientation training, typically four weeks in duration, for which we ask a €90 a week contribution (Euro 110 a week at the Alexandros Center) to cover board. (Discounts of 15% for young people of need, or from counties where earning power is limited may be available.) If by the end of this orientation period, if things have worked out well for yourself and for us and there are staff vacancies, we may be able to invite you to stay longer.

Volunteer staff beach picnic

Staff members put in about 35 hours per week with a full day off and regular afternoons at the beach. Aside from the 7 hours/week of Karma Yoga that all guests do (one 2 hr evening cooking shift, two 45 min dinner cleanup shifts, adopt a garden bed and join the Friday cleanup from 9:30 to 11:30 am) we staff volunteers also will lay out one or two buffet breakfasts and lunches, put in a couple more hours finishing Friday cleanup and if you are over 25 with a EU/UK license, drive guests to/from the beach at Ag Ioannis. Staff stay in beds in shared rooms, in tents or in the yurts. Time permitting, volunteers who have been with us for a few weeks may attend certain workshop sessions at a discounted rate. They also have discounted access to the offerings of our Facilitators in Residence (FIRs). Additionally, there are loads of opportunities for sharing skills amongst ourselves!

The booking buttons below will allow you to book in as a staff volunteer at the Kissos or Anilio center. For Alexandros please inquire if we still have vacancies following the booking button.  However, also the other centers ask that you first email them at managers@kalikalos.com to be sure that we have a vacancy for the weeks that you want.

Volunteer as a Staff Adjunct

If you have had prior experience of any of our Centres, either as a guest, workshop participant or volunteer staffer, you may also join us as a “staff-adjunct” — part-time staff and part-time Community Guest. Staff adjuncts pay € 175 per week for food and accommodation and work about 17 hours as staffers, with two full days off.

Staff adjunct is a great way to stay on after your workshop or retreat for a week or two and come closer to the community. You join the staff group as a part timer, but like a community guest you have a lot of free time to enjoy the area and the delights of Pelion.

Please note: Staff adjuncts must have had at least one week prior experience with us as workshop participant, community guest, leader, FIR or staff orientee.

2-3 Month Internships

We offer a limited number of 2-3-month long internships in the area of community living and holistic education. The cost of a 12 week programme is currently €1800 which includes meals and accommodation. (Shorter 1 or 2 month internships are €660/month.) Some scholarships may be available, please enquire .

Interns typically pick an area in holistic research that interests them and are expected to research their topic during the course of their internship and to submit a written report (in English) at the conclusion of their internship. Interns are also equivalent to long-term half-time staff adjuncts, contributing about 17 hours of practical work during each week, with one full day off for study or leisure.

The programme can be tailored to your particular interests. Areas of specialisation include consensus decision making, permaculture, organic gardening, natural building, facilitation training, herbal medicine, personal vs social transformation, holistic teacher training, circle technology, governance by sociocracy and sacred economics. Please enquire by email.
